Hodja and the Stranger Folktale

 

Once Hodja (the wise fool of Turkey) was napping under his walnut tree when he head someone call, “How long will it take me to get to the next village?” The teacher opened his eyes and saw a traveler standing in the road beyond the cantaloupe field. Hodja looked at him, but gave no answer. The man repeated, louder, “How long will it take me to get to the next village?” Hodja did not reply. “How long,” the man recited slowly, “will it take me…to get…to the next…village?” Hodja said nothing. At last the man stomped his foot, snarled to himself, and walked on. After a moment, Hodja called out, “About twenty minutes.” The man stopped, turned in his tracks, and shouted back angrily, “Why didn’t you answer me the first time?” “Because,” said Hodja, “I did not know how fast you were going to walk.”
